Ode to Happiness

What is happiness?  Can you be truly happy?  Not always.  At least not in this fallen world where tragedy happens everyday.  Sometimes only those that have truly lived through a broken heart can understand sorrow.  I had my heart broken years ago and ironically enough I think it made me a better person.  It may have even kept me humble.

I know they say "better to have loved and lost" but really no one wants to lose love once they find it.  When you find true love then you want it to last a lifetime.

Some friendships last for a lifetime and some friendships last for a season.  You know it's time to end a friendship when the friendship has the capability of hurting you.  When the friendship doesn't edify you or bring you joy.  When the friend lies to you and tries to manipulate you according to their personal agenda.  Let them go.  However easier said then done.  It's ironic that you can decide to end a friendship due to a friend's harmful treatment of you and yet that friend still has the nerve to get mad at you and won't let go.  You want to say to that ex-friend, "Think about the big beam in your eye compared to the little sticks in those around you."  A true friend will want what's best for you and not the worst.  Get lost my enemy not my friend!  My true frenemy!

Do you have talents?  Do you use them?  What if you had untapped talent that you never used?  How would you feel at the end of your life?  I remember thinking that I was wasting the talents that God had given me at one point in my life, however due to some unforeseen circumstances that happened later in my life, I was finally able to go after those talents.

It takes a certain strength of character to be able to stand by your convictions especially in a world that doesn't seem to care what boundaries they cross any longer.  I remember someone telling me years ago the thing she regretted losing most was her virginity because once you lose it, you can never go back.  And yet she pushed one of her friends to lose her virginity to a random band member.  Because people who regret want others to regret it to.  

Do you know that wolves, coyotes, barn owls, ...  to name a few, mate for life?  I know some couples that have been married for over twenty, thirty years only to each other.  Can you imaging loving someone that much that you only want to be with that one other person your whole life?  Bravo!

What does it mean to be different?  Different is not necessarily a bad thing.  Anyone can be part of a crowd but it takes gumption to be different, to be unique, to stand out from the rest.  Peer pressure is a heavy load to bear especially during the middle school and high school years but I commend you if you can withstand it.  You don't have to drink, smoke, or do drugs to be cool!  You can be cool because you're you.  I personally have never been one to buckle under peer pressure.  Just because everyone else does it doesn't mean you have to too.  Dare to be different.  Be radically you!

It's ironic but watching the movie Interstellar made me think of this verse.  If you know anything about astronomy then you have heard about tesseracts, black holes, and wormholes.  Science fiction boasts many great authors but by far my favorite is probably Madeleine L'Engle who wrote A Wrinkle in Time.

Remember this song?  Growing up I loved this song.  Anything to do with sailing!  I'm there!  There's just something about being out on the open water.  However obviously there are some that get seasick and think that being out on the water is boring.  But not me!  I could stare at the water for hours.  I kid you not!
