ee cummings

Who?

“somewhere i have never travelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near

your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skilfully, mysteriously) her first rose

or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully, suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;

nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the colour of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing

(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands”

Who was ee cummings?  He was a poet that sometimes wrote in lower case with a disregard to grammar rules.  Check out some of his work.

Fridays!

Sunny sunsets

What is it about a sunset
to see the sun go down
and cast its glows upon the earth?

A quiet contentment
streams into your soul
as you watch the beauty unfold.

Up high, down low,
on sea, on land...
Doesn't matter where.

It's the day saying
good night!  Be at peace!
Get some rest!

@JoSH Poetic Popcorn Poetry 2014

Hope you enjoy some sunsets today!

T S Eliot

The Wasteland

"April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain."

The above is an excerpt from T S Eliot's The Wasteland.  I thought it was apt what with all the rainy weather we've been having.  It almost feels like April, doesn't it, instead of June.  And July is not that far off.

David and Goliath

Fighting Giants

Do you sometimes find yourself
in an uphill battle and you're wondering
if you have anything left in you to fight?

Are you like a young David
ready to fight the giants in your life
because no one else wants to or will?

Remember young David was the only one
to have courage to fight warrior Goliath because
everyone else was scared because he was so big.

David only had a sling and some small stones
and yet he triumphed because
he defended in what he believed.

He gave God all the glory
and God gave him the victory.
Because who is in control?  God!

@JoSH Poetic Popcorn Poetry 2014

This poem is dedicated to a friend of mine who is facing her giant tomorrow.  I pray that she realizes that God is in control of every aspect of her life.

Betty MacDonald

Remember Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle?

I remember reading these books when I was a kid.  These books taught kids a lesson no matter what oddity or bad habit was portrayed.  I always thought Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's cures were funny.  I didn't realize that they had a TV series based on the books but it looks like they have.

Conundrum!

Would you?

If you could stand
up for yourself...
Would you?

If you knew
right from wrong...
Did you?

If you could help
someone...
Could you?

Everyday we make
decisions...
that test our
character.

What would
your choice be...
If you chose?

@JoSH Poetic Popcorn Poetry 2014

I think about the choices we make each day.  Can you live with the decisions you make in life?  Some are easy, some are not.  Some affect others and some just affect you.  Every decision you make has a consequence.  Just as every action has a reaction.  How do you choose to live your life?

Gary Thomas

Are you a naturalist?

I ask myself this question as I go for a walk in the woods with friends.  I do enjoy a short nature walk now and then but I recently attended a class that has you take an assessment on how you like to commune with God.  It turns out that I am a contemplative intellectual caregiver.  Who knew?  Actually it does actually sound like me.  And though I like nature, I don't love nature, at least not interactively.

Gary Thomas is the author of the book Sacred Pathways.  In this book, you will discover how your soul likes to interact with God.

Columbus Author

Kissing in Columbus!

I met one of these authors quite by chance.  We took a class together.  It's always a neat experience to meet other writers, compare notes, and get advice.  If you're romantically inclined and live in this city, you might want to grab this book for a read.

Beverly Cleary

Ramona and Beezus!  Henry Huggins too!

Remember the good old days when we read all those books during the summer book clubs?  I loved reading books by Beverly Cleary.  I loved reading period!  Those were the days!

Time

The Hourglass

Like sand in an hourglass...
slowly sometimes
usually quickly
but always moving.

Time goes by
hour by hour
minute by minute
second by second.

Tick tock
tick tock!
Do you waste your time?
And fritter it away?

Or do you value
the people in your life?
Make the most
of your day?

Time's a'wastin'
Say "I love you!"
To someone
Or say "I do care!"

Because some day...
ashes to ashes
dust to dust
and we must...

Face the music
of a life well spent
or a life spent
in self-misery.

@JoSH Poetic Popcorn Poetry

This poem was inspired because time is going by too fast.  Didn't we think that Y2K was the end?  Then 2012, the end of the Mayan calendar?  One never knows...  Tick, tock, tick, tock...  The world may not end tomorrow but each day someone has to say good-bye.  What do you believe?

An artsy field of corn!

Why Dublin

Working in a cubicle for necessary pay
Makes it worthwhile for a longer stay
Rather than a visit to a city green
Filled with rolling meadows that are somewhat clean
From overabundant trash and dirty debris
Making it serene as far as the eye can see.

A tall, majestic cornfield stands in a grassy plain
Like an entire military army without a single stain.
Emerald Parkway weaves in and out
Like a serpent in the grass and roundabout
And annually an Irish Festival appears
For which the entire city is willing to go in arrears.

Looking out the window during early sunrise
You sometimes catch a deer caught in utter surprise
At all the construction, building, and noise;
To the point that all the deer lose their poise
And the birds fly around with the wings all aflutter,
Just out of want for their bread and butter.

Dublin, Ohio is not the Dublin in Ireland

But with eyes closed, you just might envision fairyland.

@JoSH Poetic Popcorn Poetry 2009

This poem was inspired while I was looking outside my window at work years ago.  It's amazing but there really is a field of corn that is all made up of sculptures.

An Arctic Blast!

Frozen in Time

Once upon a time
a princess existed
with special powers
that she couldn't control.

She withdrew into herself
to protect the ones she loved
little knowing that her loved ones
didn't understand her actions.

Instead they felt left out
and unloved and hurt.
They didn't realize that
she loved them too much.

So she built a castle
frozen and icy cold
where she lived a life
of solitary confinement.

Self-imposed and separate
from the rest of the
kingdom that she was
meant to be Queen of.

Until she found
the key to controlling
her arctic powers.
Love conquers all!

@JoSH Poetic Popcorn Poetry 2014

This poem was inspired by the movie Frozen.  It was a movie about a princess that had special powers that she couldn't control so she set herself apart from other people and especially her sister.  Sometimes in life we push people away that we love in order to protect them.  Little knowing how much we hurt the ones we love in the process.  This poem is dedicated to my sister, who although we don't see eye to eye with each other most of the time, do care about each other nonetheless.

Captain Dave

Sailing the Cinema Waves

Yo Mateys!  Ahoy there!
Have you heard of Captain Dave?
A man dedicated to
sharing his visual dreams?

A producer extraordinaire
who has spent the past
thirty-three years of his life
producing cinematic productions?

What does it take to produce
a production?  White balance,
Choreographer, Visual Artist,
Music, Actors and Actresses...

Who was once but a child
that began their acting career
playing in a Captain Dave Production
that now claims stardom?

What about the members
of the Mickey Mouse Club
now running rampant
all over Tinsel Town Hollywood.

@JoSH Poetic Popcorn Poetry 2014

This poem is dedicated to Captain Dave who runs Captain Dave Productions out of Cleveland, Ohio.  There is a lot of local talent in our Midwest part of the country.  He is working on yet another new production this year.

Love Your Neighbor: Easier Said than Done!

1 Corinthians Chapter 13

1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

This is one of my favorite passages from the Bible.  What would we do without faith, hope, and love in our lives?  Especially since I know I'm not perfect.
