Murphy's Law

Days Like This!

Ever have a day
where you woke up
in the morning
thinking about the things
you really needed to do?

Except once you got
out of bed you kept going
in the wrong direction
and had to pull yourself
out of one chaos after another?

I have days like this!
Where Murphy reigns
no matter what I do.
Why?  Why?  Why?
Disasters stay away!

However I suppose
if it wasn't for those
days gone awry
I would never enjoy
the good days so much.

So...  Murphy...
you may have me for a day or two.
 But I have days
when serendipity falls my way.
And I enjoy them immensely!

@JoSH Poetic Popcorn Poetry

Well...  it is true!  You have days when nothing goes your way and you are ready to pull your hair out.  However you also have very good days too!  And you can't believe how good it gets.  When Murphy pulls you into his hemisphere, why not treat yourself to an ice cream or chocolate cookie?  It'll be a little bit of sweetness in an otherwise chaotic, crazy day!  :)

Franklin D Roosevelt

Sailing Quote

“To reach a port we must set sail –
Sail, not tie at anchor
Sail, not drift.”

This is a quote by Franklin D Roosevelt.  I like quotes and am always looking for meaningful ones to add to my collection.  Recently a friend of mine told me that the term "waterslide" came to mind when she thought of me and I was trying to figure out the significance.  I then remembered an incident from years ago when I was much younger and had walked up a bunch of stairs to go down a waterslide thinking it would be fun.  The only thing I hadn't realized was exactly how far up that waterslide was and I got up to the top only to look down and think that there is no way I can go down that slide; however when I looked down the stairs that I had just come from, I realized that walking down would be much worse, so down the slide I went.  For me, a "waterslide" represents taking a risk to follow my dreams.  New situations always bring on some anxiety but sometimes we have to just "take the bull by the horns" and go for it!

Rest & Relaxation Haiku

Be Still

Soaking in sunshine...
Resting with no thoughts of work.
Be comfortable!

It's the weekend!  Enjoy and have fun!  I'm headed to an annual Crabfest with lots of eats!  Yummy!

Dr David Jeremiah

The Coming Economic Armageddon

So...  where is our country headed?  On any count?  Our economy is tanking, our country is up to our ears in debt, our country is losing soldiers and journalists right and left...  I must admit though on some level it does make me feel better knowing that I will never be trillions of dollars in debt like the government.  What a comparison, huh?  David Jeremiah wrote this book to explain some of the financial happenings in our world today.

Music

Listening...

Hmmm...
it begins
with a
single note.
Then you add
some more notes
and soon
you have a melody.
Sounds that
will make you
laugh and smile.
But also sounds
that will make you
sad and cry.
Because
there is something
in music that touches
the inner soul.
And in turn your heart.

@JoSH Poetic Popcorn Poetry

Listening to music has always brought me joy but also brings me sorrow.  Music is cathartic.  It cleanses and lifts up your soul.

Peter Buffet

Life Is What You Make It!

I have not had a chance to read Peter Buffet's book yet but I found out about it tonight at a local musicale  that I was personally invited to that featured Peter Buffet and Michael Kott in concert.  My favorite song was Amarcord which they sang as an encore because it mentioned sailing and I do love to sail.  It was an extremely informative and enjoyable evening and was topped off by being able to meet both musicians in person after the show.  Thank you both for such an enjoyable evening!

Matthew West

Do Something!

I woke up this morning
Saw a world full of trouble now
Thought, how’d we ever get so far down
How’s it ever gonna turn around
So I turned my eyes to Heaven
I thought, “God, why don’t You do something?”

Have you heard this song before?  Sometimes song lyrics remind me of prose poetry.  This song was written by Matthew West.  It's a song that makes you sit up and take notice.  Rather than sit and wait around for God to do something, why not take action yourself?  It's like Esther's story in the Bible.  If she hadn't stood up for her beliefs then she would have died and maybe that's why she was chosen to be Xerxes Queen.  Hers is an interesting story and is told in One Night with the King

Autumn Haiku

Falling

Leaves turning color
and drifting, falling off trees,
covering all ground.

I thought I would read outside today.  The weather forecast called for lots of rain but it actually turned out to be a very sunny day and so I couldn't resist going outside.  I love reading in the sunlight feeling the wind blowing around me.  I also love reading inside on rainy days.  I'm dreading the cold this year.

Nicholas Sparks

 Dear John

“The saddest people I've ever met in life are the ones who don't care deeply about anything at all. Passion and satisfaction go hand in hand, and without them, any happiness is only temporary, because there's nothing to make it last.”

This quote makes me think of the movie Pleasantville or The Giver.  Haven't you ever met someone that just had no feeling at all?  You think of them as being colorless and void.  What happened to them to make them so?  Why are they living in a prison of their own making?  Or was it not their choice?

Henry David Thoreau

To Live the Life that You Have Imagined!

I recently discovered this quote of Henry David Thoreau's, as if he didn't already have a ton of them, but it spoke to me.  The quote is...

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler."

I like the line, "Live the life you have imagined."  Everyone has a life that they want to lead but not everyone gets to lead that life.  Many people are married to people they can't stand or working in jobs they can't stand.  However who really has the guts to go after what they want?  Some people do!  It's a risk though.  It's like falling in love, you can't guarantee that the person you fall in love with is going to make you happy.  You have a 50/50 chance.  Just like how you don't know when you take that job that seems so ideal for you that you may come to hate it.  Life's too short to waste.  However people waste time everyday.  Time is more valuable than money:  With money, you win some, you lose some.  With time, every minute you lose is gone forever.

I have talents that I never used for so long because I was working in a place that never really let me use them.  I am now using my talents and I feel so much happier.  I am striving "to life the life that I have imagined."  Won't you join me?  Think about what really matters!

Promises

Mean What You Say

I say this...
You say that...
Do you mean
what you say?
Why say it
anyway?
We are a
people that
live life in
a hurry.
We say this
to appease
but instead feel
relieved because
we don't mean
to deceive
but go along
our merry way.
Don't make a promise
you do not intend
to keep.
If you don't mean
to do it.
Just never say it!

@JoSH Poetic Popcorn Poetry

Do you ever really think about the things you say to people and the promises you make but never keep?  I really strive to keep my promises but sometimes life gets in the way and a promise here and there might go astray, but if I remember it, I will do my best to keep it.  I think back on my Dad's time in hospice and I know I let some things fall between the cracks but usually I really do try to keep my promises.  There are times when it may take longer but they do say "better late than never."

End of Summer Haiku

Farewell

The blue sky beckons
to pool aimlessly floating
idyllic summer.

@JoSH Popcorn Poetic Poetry

Well, sad as it is to say, the summer is winding down and there is not a lot of pool time left.  Leaves are starting to fall off trees and changing color.  Cars are starting to see leaves fall down.  This might be a time to start California dreaming!  Remember that song from the Beach Boys?  I got to see them in concert once!  What an awesome evening.  Just sitting outside, listening to music, and eating with friends.  Life in a heartbeat!

Debby Jones & Jackie Kendall

Lady in Waiting

This book is about waiting for the right man to come into your life and if he hasn't shown up yet then becoming the right woman for when you finally meet the right man.  This was recommended by one of the pastors at Victorious Living Christian Center during the Beautiful Women's Conference that was held this past weekend.  If you attended you got to hear powerful messages as well as sing powerful songs.

C S Lewis

God in the Dock

I was reading something that referred to this book and thought it might be an interesting read.  To find out more about C S Lewis just check out his website.  He's the author that brought us the Chronicles of Narnia series.

Helen Steiner Rice

Bend in the Road

When we feel we have nothing left to give
And we are sure that the song has ended,
When our day seems over and the shadows fall
And the darkness of night has descended,

Where can we go to find the strength
To valiantly keep on trying?
Where can we find the hand that will dry
The tears that the heart is crying?

There’s but one place to go and that is to God,
And dropping all pretense and pride,
We can pour out our problems without restraint
And gain strength with Him at our side.

And together we stand at life’s cross roads
And view what we think is the end,
But God has a much bigger vision,
And He tells us it’s only a bend.

For the road goes on and is smoother,
And the pause in the song is a rest,
And the part that’s unsung and unfinished
Is the sweetest and richest and best.

So rest and relax and grow stronger
Let go and let God share your load.
Your work is not finished or ended
You’ve just come to a bend in the road.

I was listening to the radio this morning and heard this poem being recited.  I thought it was an encouraging poem letting you know that God is with you when you go through life's trials. I would rather go through them with God then go it alone.  I was sorry to hear that Helen Steiner Rice passed away.  She would have been a great person to meet!
